Week 15 : Backup / Review

This week, my favorite item from the course announcements was Grammar Lessons with Food. I loved it and thought it was so cute and funny! It definitely made me smile this Sunday afternoon! I did not expect it to be so funny, I was expecting a legit grammar lesson! Loved it!

Here is the video below from YouTube if anyone is interested in watching it!

Reflections

This class was so unique and different from any class I have ever taken from OU. From the format, the content, the grading, the self-directed work schedule, the writing, the interactions, and the online innovation, this class surpassed my expectations. I am so proud of myself for growing as a writer in this class. I have always enjoyed writing, but writing about something specific and putting it out online for my peers to read and comment on was very scary at first. I learned to let go of what others think and actually, everything I thought other students would think was weird was the exact opposite, the LIKED it! I am also pleased that I learned new writing techniques, how to retell a story (even if it is unfamiliar or an old ancient tale), and how to slow down my proof-reading process. I am proud of putting all my effort into this class because I defiantly got a lot out of it!

Week 13 : Famous Last Words

Wow, I can't believe that there are only three more weeks left in this semester. Where did this semester go? Time really does fly. I swear last week was the middle of January and the first day of spring semester classes. I swear that I blinked, and when I opened my eyes, it was suddenly the end of April. With the last three weeks approaching, I am trying to keep myself on track and motivated to finish the semester strong. Even though this beautiful weather this past weekend was a huge tease for summer, I have to remember to continue to study and stay on top of my remaining school work and projects. I have three large group projects in my Marketing, Spanish, and Personal Training classes to complete by dead week and my goal is to make significant progress on all of them before the end of this week. Group work is never my favorite, but I am determined to have a positive attitude about it and put all of me effort into each project! I also want to continue to manage my budget well these next few weeks so I can save up for some new clothes and swimsuits for my upcoming vacations to Galveston and Aruba in May. I can't believe my junior year is almost over. I swear I was a freshman yesterday and then all the sudden turned into an upperclassmen today. I wish I could stay a junior at OU forever. I don't want to be a senior because I don't want to grow up nor leave Norman. If I could give one piece of advice to all incoming freshman / high school seniors, it would be to not take any moment for granted! Love where you are and what you do, and live life to the fullest!
Finish!

Week 13 Reading Diary :

Tuesday Reading Diary
I chose to read stories from the Brother's Grimm (Crane) unit this week.

The Fisherman and His Wife
Wow what a demanding wife! Its crazy how she told her husband what she wanted and he just immediately asked the flounder for more and more. I liked how this story keep progressing the same each chapter. This wife was dissatisfied and kept wanting more and more and finally the fish denied her the right to make the sun set and rise. Gosh she was a brat!

Aschenputtel
I love the description of the new daughters, "The new wife brought two daughters home with her, and they were beautiful and fair in appearance, but at heart were black and ugly." I had no idea that the story is actually Cinderella! I did not know that her original name was Aschenputtel. How interesting that the story was still different that then version I know. Aschenputtel would disappear in different places and the king attempted to cut down trees and house but could not find her. However, the shoe that she left behind is the same, except it is gold. I can't believe that the one of the step-daughters cut her toe off in order for her foot to fit into the shoe, and the other cut part of her heel off! That was definitely left out in the movie. I can't believe their punishment was to go blind!

The Robber Bridegroom
Wow this story was crazy! I am so glad the bride was able to hide and escape with the old women and not cut into pieces and eaten by the cannibals. I liked how the bride told the story to the whole town on their wedding day and the evil bridegroom got what he deserved! She portrayed it as a dream which is very clever when trying to find a way to exposure the criminal!

Storytelling Week 12 : Alice in Rap Battle

"That looks terrible," said 5.

"Well do you have a better idea to try and cover up this mistake?" said 7.

"No," replied 5.

"We don't have much time before the Queen comes. We need to hurry" said 3.
Alice

The cards were working frantically trying to pain the white roses red. The cards were instructed to plant white rose trees in the garden and red rose trees in the courtyard. However, a white rose tree was accidentally planted in the courtyard and the cards were attempting to paint the white roses red in order for the tree to blend in.

"What happens if she Queen notices that this isn't a real red rose tree," asked Alice, who had been curiously watching the cards paint.

"She will say ' OFF WITH THEIR HEADS' and we will be killed!" said 7.

Trumpets started playing in the distance. "THE QUEEN!" yelled the cards! They frantically threw their paint brushes to the side and attempted to blend into the grass.

The Queen of Hearts marched into her courtyard with her soldiers. "What is this!" demanded the Queen.

"It is a rose tree, just like you asked," said 3.

"This is not RED rose tree! This is a WHITE rose tree that has been painted in order to fool me! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS" screamed the Queen.

Alice interrupted, "Wait! They were just trying to fix their mistake. There must be another way instead of killing them."

Queen of Hearts
"And who are you?"

"Oh, I'm Alice"

"OFF WITH HER HEAD!"

"Wait! Please! I am only a little girl! Surely we can settle this civilly!"

The Queen pondered for a minute. "Okay, rap battle it is. Me and you in the courtyard. If I win then I get to take you and the cards' heads off. And if you win, you and the cards are safe."

The Queen, her army, Alice, the cards, and all the other animals gathered around the courtyard for the rap battle.

"You're up first, your majesty," said Alice.

The Queen cleared her throat.

Yo Yo Yo
I'm the Queen of Hearts,
I am very smart.
The cards painted the white roses,
And of courses I noticed.
They messed up my tree, how could this be?
For everyone knows that I'm the Queen bee.

The crowd went wild! Alice grabbed the mic.

Queen bee? What do ya mean?
You definitely don't do the right thing.
Off with their heads!
You want them dead!
Thats the definition of an airhead!

The courtyard in unison yelled, "OH!!!!" Alice killed it. The Queen had to think on her toes for the next verse.

You're just a little girl who fell down a rabbit hole,
You ate bread that turned you into a troll.
You crashed the tea party with the Mad Hatter,
And you talk to yourself in some kind of chatter.
Then say you're talking to the Cheshire cat, who's that?
I don't know but baby you're kinda WACK!

The courtyard went crazy.

The Cheshire cat is my friend,
Something that you wouldn't be able to comprehend.
 I fell from a rabbit hole into this world,
But I hate it here, it makes me wanna hurl.
You say someone stole your sweet tarts?
That's funny.
Why would anyone eat something that tastes like farts.

***Drops Mic***

The courtyard chanted Alice's name. The cards dog pilled her and hugged her in relief. Alice stared at the Queen, whose face was as white as a ghost.

"Come on cards, lets go home." And Alice and the cards left wonderland.

The End

Author's Note
I based my story this week of the story, The Queen's Croquet-Ground, from the Alice in Wonderland Unit this week. In the original story, Alice wonders into the Queen of Heart's courtyard and finds cards (playing cards) painting white roses red. They planted the wrong color of roses and if they Queen found out, she would behead them. The Queen did arrive and yelled to her soldiers, "Off with their heads!" After Alice tried arguing with the Queen, the Queen asked Alice to play croquet. This is where I made a spin on the story. Instead of playing croquet, I had the Queen and Alice compete in a rap battle. The rhyming scheme for the raps go AA BB CC. I had the raps contain things from the other chapters in the unit such as the Cheshire Cat, falling down the rabbit hole, stolen sweet tarts, the Mad Hatter's tea party, and beheading the cards for painting the roses. I had Alice "drop mic" after her rap because that is a slang term that many people use and do when they "slay" in a rap battle. I had so much fun writing my story with a new approach!

Week 12 Reading Diary : Alice in Wonderland continued.

Reading Diary B  : Alice in Wonderland
Source: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (1865).

I love Alice in Wonderland and I love that I get to read the actual stories by Lewis Carroll! I have only seen Disney movie and loved getting to read the stories that the movie was based off of.

I would feel so awkward if I was Alice, arriving at the tea party in the Mad-Tea Party story! The March Hare and the Mad Hatter were pretty rude and had some sly and devious remarks to make to Alice! I wonder why the table was set for more than three people if the Mad Hatter and March Hare didn't want there to be more than three people at their tea party? I'm glad Alice stormed off because the tea party was too much commotion for even me!
I love how the cards call each other by their numbers in the story The Queen's Croquet-Ground!That would be interesting to retell a story and name all the characters odd names or use numbers! The Queen is a firecracker! I could name few people I know that would be furious about colored roses! I loved how strange and different the croquet game is in this story : the use of flamingos for mallets, hedgehogs for balls, and soldiers doing back bends to make arches! So fun! I would love to use this element in my storytelling this week!
I like how all the characters and parts of the previous chapters make full circle in the Who Stole The Hearts chapter. I was surprised seeing the Mad Hatter as a witness and the white rabbit as the reader. I'm glad the Mad Hatter got away before they caught him to execute him! Why do the Queen and King want everyone executed? That is not good leadership at all! I'm glad Alice woke up in time, but man what strange dream! She must have taken a lot of melatonin to have this peculiar dream!

Week 12 Tech Tip : Weather Widget

This week for my technology tip, I added a weather widget to my side bar! I have seen other students do it on their blogs and I wanted to add one to mine as well. Here is the link to the instructions if anyone is interested in adding a weather widget to their blog! It is super easy!

Reading Diary : Alice in Wonderland

Reading Diary A  : Alice in Wonderland
Source: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (1865).

I love Alice in Wonderland and I love that I get to read the actual stories by Lewis Carroll! I have only seen Disney movie and loved getting to read the stories that the movie was based off of.

I love the curiosity Alice has in the beginning in Down the Rabbit-Hole  section. When she was falling down the hole, I felt like it was almost in slow motion because she had so much time to think about so many different things. I also enjoy how strange the story is ; Alice follows a rabbit down a hole and falls, but doesn't get hurt, and ends up in a room full of different sizes of doors. The creativity and bizarreness of these stories is awesome. I'm glad Alice checked the drink to see if it was poison or not. That would be an interesting plot twist if it was poison and the story ended right then and there. How strange that a drink could make you grow smaller and a piece of cake could make you grow to the height of a skyscraper!
Aha! The lovely hookah smoking caterpillar! I wonder what Lewis Carroll's inspiration was to create a talking, hookah smoking caterpillar in the chapter, Advice from a Caterpillar? Maybe Lewis Carroll was trying to imply that Alice was high as well, entering this weird and strange world? I also didn't know that Alice didn't know how to speak correctly anymore! It makes so much more sense now! The caterpillar is so blunt, I love it!
I vaguely remember this story, Pepper and Pig, from one the adapted movies of Alice in Wonderland. It was interesting to read! This story is crazy and has a lot of stimulus going on! I wonder why this part was left out in the Disney version? Maybe because it seems a little violent with the Duchess throwing her baby around and singing a song about how she beats him when he sneezes!
I also didn't the Cheshire Cat was a girl! I always thought it was a boy cat! I also like how the Cheshire Cat talks about how everyone in this world is mad, because everything about Lewis Carroll's stories are queer! Just like Alice said, "She was used to queer things happening."

Learning Challenges : Health/Happiness Tip

Running = natural stress reliever
I think blog post, I am going to share one of my health/happiness tips - exercising daily. I know it might seem vague and stupid but I promise it can benefit you more than you think! I work out daily but sometimes when I am very stressed or upset, I will go on a nice slow jog with my favorite music to clear my mind. If I had a bad night the night before, I look forward to my workout in the morning to give me endorphins, help me feel better, and to start the day of with a fresh start and new mindset. Not only does working out help you physique and fitness, it is a natural "feel good" remedy and also a stress reliever. I notice that if I don't work out for a day or two, my anxiety is worse than normal. Working out everyday helps relieve my anxiety and helps keep me motivated to do everything in my life to the best of my ability.

Week 11 Storytelling : This Little Piggy

"Alright, everyone settle down now," said Judge Bacon while pounding his gavel.

The pigs in the courtroom were arguing and oinking uncontrollably. It was mad chaos. A misdemeanor had been committed in the Oink City and Judge Bacon was determined to get to the bottom of it.

"Yesterday at 3 o'clock, there was a speed chase through Oink City. Someone was speeding down the street in a John Deere tractor, going way over the speed limit. Unfortunately, the cops were unable to seize the traffic violator. In order to keep this town safe, we must find the perpetrator in order to prevent our pig citizens from being run over and turning into bacon strips."

"With that being said, will the first victim take the stand?" said Judge Bacon. Porky walked up to the stand.

"Where were you yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock?" asked Judge Bacon.

"I was at the m-m-m-m-m-market. I was out of corn meal and had to feed my little p-p-p-piglets and my wife, Miss Piggy," said Porky.

"Can I see Miss Piggy on the stand, please?" asked Judge Bacon.

Miss Piggy waddled up to the stand. "Yesterday I was at home all day. A parent had to stay at home with the children while the other went to the store. We were out of corn meal and the kids were starving. You can ask all my baby piggies, I was at home with them while Porky went to the market."

Judge Bacon dismissed Miss Piggy from the stand. He then summoned Hamilton to the stand.

"Hamilton, tell me about your day yesterday."

"Well, I woke up around noon because the night before I was at the Farmhouse with some friends," explained Hamilton. (The Farmhouse was the most popular night club and bar in Oink City.)

"And obviously I woke up starving so I went to the Greenhouse, my favorite restaurant, to get some grub."

"Grub?" asked Judge Bacon.

"Yeah, you know like vegetables, grass, and maybe chicken strips."

The jury gasped. It was unheard of for pigs to eat meat. It just wasn't right and didn't make sense. The pigs from Oink City were allies with animals from other towns such as Mooville and Chicktown.

"Yeah, you can even look at my receipt if you want," said Hamilton.

"Next!" said Judge Bacon. Ollie, a younger pig, walked up to the stand nervously.

"Ollie, where were you yesterday at 3 o'clock?"

"Well... I didn't eat any meat. I didn't have any," said Ollie.

"You didn't have any?" said Judge Bacon.

"No, Judge Bacon."

"So what were you doing?"

"I told you, I wasn't eating meat."

Judge Bacon, frustrated from the trial, let out a big sigh. "Alright, can I please have the final victim to the stand."

Pinky strolled up to the stand.

"Pinky, tell me what you were up to yesterday afternoon."

"Well, I was out at the Farmhouse the night before enjoying a nice pigtini and dancing the night away. I accidentally drank too many pigtinis and ended up falling asleep. When I woke up yesterday afternoon, I still felt happy from the pigtinis so I just squealed and couldn't find my way home."

"You were lost?" asked Judge Bacon.

"Yes! I was so confused where I was. So I just said 'wee, wee, wee' until I was able to find my way home." Pinky was not the smartest pig in the barn.

"How did you get home?"

"I just hopped on the big green tractor sitting outside of the Farmhouse!"

"Thank you, Pinky, that is all," said Judge Bacon.

The jury gathered together to make their decision and gave Judge Bacon the verdict. Judge Bacon banged his gavel.

Knock, knock, knock!

"The jury has reached a verdict," announced Judge Bacon.

"The court finds Pinky guilty of a traffic violation She is sentenced to two weeks in the barn. Court adjourned."

I decided to use a video instead of an image this week because this commercial is hilarious, it is one of my favorite Geico advertisements, and it relates to the story. Enjoy!

Author's Note:
I based this story off of the Nursery Rhyme This Little Piggy. The rhyme is below.

THIS pig went to market;
This pig stayed at home;

This pig had a bit of meat,

And this pig had none;

This pig said, "Wee, wee, wee!

I can't find my way home."

I retold the original nursery rhyme as a courtroom drama. Each piggy in my story represents one of the pigs from the nursery rhyme. Porky is the pig that went to the market, Miss Piggy is the pig who stayed at home, Hamilton is the big who had a bit of meat, Ollie was the pig who had none, and Pinky was the pig who said, "Wee, wee ,wee" and couldn't find her way home. I decided to make the story more animal-like and gave my story different  "piglike" characteristics. For example, the judge's name was named Judge Bacon (since pigs are bacon) and all of the pigs lived in Oink City. Also, I thought it was comical to rename an adult alcoholic beverage an "pigtini" instead of calling it martini or another real beverage name.I put links to resources that talk about each character and the famous shows and movies that they originated from! I thought it would be cool to bring them all into one story! I had a lot of fun recreating this nursery rhyme into a story and hope everyone enjoys it!

Week 11 Reading Diary continued: Nursery Rhythms

I chose to read stories the British unit, Nursery Rhythms.  I read some stories by Andrew Lang before and thought these short and fun nursery rhythms would be enjoyable to do and plus I also wanted to switch up the style of readings for this week!

Wednesday Reading Diary
Since there were many different nursery rhythms in each story / section/ chapter ( whatever you want to call it), I decided I to pick my favorite one out of each.

Jingles - I liked the jingle Hey Diddle Diddle in this section. I remember this rhythm from when I was a kid. I think it would be fun to retell. Plus, I really like the picture which depicts the entire rhythm.
Love and Matrimony - Jack and Jill was my favorite in this section. I liked the rhyming in this rhythm and interestingly, Jack and Jill are referred to King Louis XVI - Jack -who was beheaded (lost his crown) followed by his Queen Marie Antoinette - Jill - (who came tumbling after).
Natural History Part 1 -  I think this rhythm would be fun to re tell in a story!
THERE was a little boy went into a barn,
And lay down on some hay;
An owl came out and flew about,
And the little boy ran away.

Natural History Part 2 -  I love how the hen is carrying for this man! It makes me think of a nurse or a companion for an old person!
I HAD a little hen, the prettiest ever seen;
She washed me the dishes, and kept the house clean;
She went to the mill to fetch me some flour;
She brought it home in less than an hour;
She baked me my bread, she brew'd me my ale;
She sat by the fire, and told many a fine tale.

Accumulative Stories -  I like how all of these stories/ rhythms keep adding onto the story! Especially "This is the House that Built Jack". A new line is added each time, which the previous ones underneath. It reminds me of the 12 days of Christmas song!
Relics - My favorite was rain rain go away. I feel like this rhythm could be retold as a little kid who is stuck inside and all he wants to do is go outside and play.
RAIN, rain, go away;
Come again another day;
Little Arthur wants to play.

Week 11 Reading Diary : Nursery Rhythms

I chose to read stories the British unit, Nursery Rhythms.  I read some stories by Andrew Lang before and thought these short and fun nursery rhythms would be enjoyable to do and plus I also wanted to switch up the style of readings for this week!

Tuesday Reading Diary
Since there were many different nursery rhythms in each story / section/ chapter ( whatever you want to call it), I decided I to pick my favorite one out of each.

Tales-  I liked the nursery rhyme of Solomon Grundy because it laid out his life story basically in 8 lines. Although, I wish he didn't die.
Proverbs -  "MARCH winds and April showers, Bring forth May flowers" So true! Maybe some tornados if you're in Oklahoma!
Songs, Part 1 -  I liked the song London Bridge is Falling Down in this section! I went to the wikipedia page and researched more about the meaning behind the song. The rhythm is actually used in a children's game. The song/ games resembles the bridge that was fracturing and was hard to repair. However, there are alternative theories to the real meaning behind the rhythm such as the Viking Attacks Theory and the Children Sacrifice Theory. Very interesting!
Songs, Part 2 - This section was my favorite because I recognized some of the famous nursery rhymes from my childhood such as Three Blind Mice and Hot Cross Buns, which I could play very well on the recorder when I was 9.
Riddles -  I love how there are answers to each riddle included in the reading! My favorite riddle is-
  I HAVE a little sister, they call her Peep, Peep;
She wades the waters deep, deep, deep;
She climbs the mountains high, high, high;
Poor little creature she has but one eye.
The answer is a star which I personally think was a stretch but very creative!
Paradoxes - I liked the following rhythm because I would definitely have a drink if all the trees were bread and cheese!
IF all the world was apple-pie,
And all the sea was ink,
And all the trees were bread and cheese,
What should we have for drink?
Charms and Lullabies  - Rock-a-bye Baby was definitely a familiar lullaby and definitely and interesting one! I looked up some possible meanings behind the lullaby on the wikepdia page. One being a representation of how mothers gently rock their babies (as in tree tops) and lay them down to go to sleep. Another  suggests that it resembles native-american mothers who actually rocked their babies in cribs made out of tree branches, allowing the wind to slowly sway them to sleep.
Games - So I recognized Jack Be Nimble right away. I again did some more research and found out that it if was used as a sport to test your luck. You had good luck if you cleared the flame. Also, in Don Mclean's song, American Pie, there is a verse that includes the nursery rhyme :
Jack be nimble,
Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire's the devil's only friend.
I'm assuming that the last line refers to landing on the flame and receiving bad luck, which is why the devil is also referenced to in the song. It is funny because when I was little, my cousins and I loved this song and could sing it by heart and still can! Here is a link to the song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGJqo_bkAuM

Week 10 : Famous Last Words

As Week 10 comes to an end, I couldn’t be more thankful, proud, and exhausted. On Wednesday this past week, I flew to Houston to the Final Four with the OU Spirit Program. I was so excited to be chosen to cheer at the final basketball tournament this year. When we arrived in Houston, we attended many appearances for alumni, participated in photoshoots and commercials for new stations such as CBS, and practiced for for the game. We waited anxiously for the OU men’s basketball team to play on Saturday night. Finally, when the day came, we sent the team off on their bus to the NRG stadium in Downtown Houston. When we arrived at the NRG stadium, the arena was packed and I was taken back when I realized I would be cheering at the largest event in collegiate athletics. It was absolutely breathtaking and so surreal to be at the Final Four in the middle of all the action. Unfortunately, the outcome of the game didn’t turnout the way we wanted. The Sooners had an incredible season and I am so proud of everything the team has accomplished these past few years! Coach Kruger is an absolute class act in times of adversity and his players resemble this characteristic as well. I am so thankful for the opportunity to cheer on the best basketball team in the nation on the biggest stage. As I return to Norman this afternoon, I am feeling a mix of emotions. I feel sad because of the bitter loss and the way the season ended but also I feel happy and content for the trip to Houston with my teammates was one to remember. I can’t wait to see the OU men’s basketball team continue to grow next year. Although it is sad to see the senior starters - Buddy, Spangler, Cousins, Woodard, leave this year, I know they will achieve great things in the future and I know Coach Kruger will continue his legacy with the new team next season.

Reading Diary Week 10 : Eskimo Folk Tales

The following notes on the following stories are from the Eskimo Folk Tales unit.

Tuesday Reading
The Coming of Men, A Long, Long While Ago- I liked how at the end of the story, when the men died, they became bright shining stars and help light the sky up. I also liked that men decided they needed dogs!
- The Woman Who Had a Bear as a Foster-Son- Crazy to think that a polar bear could be an adopted child! I wonder what other animals would have been good "foster children". This could be a fun story to retell using another animal.
-Qalagánguasê, Who Passed to the Land of Ghosts- Poor Qalagánguase!! At least he got to be with his family at the end. Interesting to think that people thought he turned into a women when he disappeared, but actually he was a ghost! Could be a fun halloween story to retell!
- The Giant Dog- A very gruesome story! I was caught off guard because usually dogs are are so sweet and would not eat humans! I would be scared too of giant dogs if I ever met this one!

Wednesday Reading
Papik Who Killed His Wife's Brother Wow! There is no mercy for Papik! I like how the mom got revenge and it thought it was so weird that it was custom for men back in the day to kill their wife's brothers. So strange and twisted.

Pâtussorssuaq, Who Killed His Uncle- A twisted love story. I wonder what would have happened if Pâtussorssuaq didn't kill his uncle? Would he still have been madly in love with his uncle's wife? (Which is also his aunt...) I'm glad the uncle (now a fox) got revenge on his nephew for being so cruel. "Thus punishment falls upon the man who kills."
The Wife Who Lied- I wonder why the wife thought it was ok to lie to her own tribe about her husbands? All she did was start a war that ended up killing others and herself. A great moral behind the gruesomeness of this story.
-Ángángŭjuk- I'm glad Ángángŭjuk went after his child and found him! I am also glad he didn't end up killing his wife, that would make his situation even worse! I liked the protective father role Ángángŭjuk played in this story because my father would definitely go to extremes to find me! Instead of having wizards help him find me, he would hire the whole FBI!

Week 9 Storytelling : ABC's The Bachelorette

Jojo - Season 20 Bachelorette
Jojo, after losing Ben to Lauren B. in the last season of the Bachelor, is ready to take on her role as ABC’s new Bachelorette. She stood in front of the beautiful Bachelor Mansion in California, wearing her formal evening gown and patiently waiting for the 25 lucky contestants to arrive.

One by one, the men got out of the limo. When the news was released that Jojo was going to be the next Bachelorette, fans went wild. Jojo is gorgeous, fun, outgoing, caring, compassionate, and so many other qualities that a man would love to have in his future wife. Many male contestants auditioned and only 25 lucky men were selected to be on the show.

All of the men were very attractive and handsome. Every girl viewing the show from her TV could only think, “Wow, Jojo is so lucky to be surrounded by so many attractive guys.”

However, as the show progressed, Jojo continued to send home America’s favorite men. But why? Contestants with amazing qualities, physical attractiveness, and financial stability were having their hearts broken by Jojo each week.

Rose Ceremony
As the show advanced throughout the season, Jojo continued to give roses to the men she liked and had connections with, and sent home the ones she couldn't see herself marrying.

Week by week went by, and now Jojo was down to four contestants.

Michael JamesonPro surfer from the coast of California, reigning National Surf Champion, enjoys romance novels, seafood fanatic, and graduate from UCLA.

Adam Long : CEO of his own software company in Dallas, enjoys vacations to the Caribbean and lazy Sundays in his Uptown Dallas condo.

Owen Stevens : 26-year old from LA, works 3 different jobs, and enjoys volunteering at the homeless shelter, animal shelter, and children's hospital in his free time.

Ryan Smith : Successful lawyer in Chicago, golden-doodle owner, loves attending Chicago Bulls' basketball games in his suite, and enjoys taking joy rides in his Ferrari.

When there are four men are remaining on the show, each contestant takes the bachelorette to their hometowns to introduce the bachelorette (possibly potential wife) to their families.
Michael's Family's house in California

Jojo visited the homes of Adam, Michael, and Ryan. Each of these three men had  large and lavish mansions with a plethora of expensive art, designer furniture, and an incredible backyard pool and patio area.

When Jojo went to Owen’s hometown to meet his family, the experience was much different. Owen’s house was tiny. There were cracks in the walls, leaks in the ceiling, old creaky wooden floors, and old wallpaper on the walls since the family could not afford to repaint or fix the home.

Jojo’s visit in Owen’s hometown with his family was one of her favorites.Owen wasn’t a trust fund baby and didn’t live a luxurious life like the other contestants.

 “I had never felt so loved and welcomed into someone else’s home,” said Jojo after the hometown date. “Yes, Owen’s family isn’t as privileged as some of the other families. But their hospitality and compassionate hearts are something that makes them more privileged in my opinion.”

After the hometown dates, Jojo sent home Adam, the software CEO. The next week she sent home Michael, the pro surfer, who did not take the breakup very easily. He did not think it was "rad" or "chill" at all.

The next week was finally the season finale. Without a doubt in her mind or her heart, Jojo picked Owen over Ryan and Owen proposed immediately at the finale.

Jojo & Owen's Engagement
After the show, Jojo and Owen attended many interviews and made several guest appearances on different TV talk shows.

In one talk show, the host asked, “Now, Jojo, what made you chose Owen?”

“Because he was the most genuine heart I have ever seen. He is the most beautiful person on the inside which in turn makes him the most beautiful person on the outside. I have never been happier with a decision.”

And Jojo and Owen remained one of the few couples from the TV show that remained married and in love for years.

The Bachelorette

Author’s Note

This story was based on the story, The Child of the Evening Star from the American Indian Fairy Tales Unit. The original story had three parts, but I chose to retell the first portion of the story. A hunter had ten beautiful daughters who each were married off to prestigious  attractive, and skillful husbands. Oweenee, the youngest daughter, could not find a suitor who met her expectations. She turned down many suitors and none of her sisters understood why. They were all wealthy and attractive but yet Oweenee did not want to marry any of them. That is until a man named Osseo came along. Osseo was not the most attractive and he was very poor. However, Oweenee loved his genuine heart and chose to marry him.  I chose to retell my the story used the ABC's famous TV show : The Bachelorette / Bachelor (depending on if it is a woman or man). The last season just ended and Jojo Fletcher (yes a real person) was the runner up and was chosen as the next Bachelorette. Her season will air next January. I wanted Jojo to pick someone who was genuine and kind instead of someone who was rich and privileged. I described Owen's home the way I did to compare it to the mansions of the other suitors (comparable to the ones from the original story).
